Greetings all AlphaWomen! As my maiden voyage into the world of blogging, I would like to share an inspirational story with you. I am an advisor at Kendall College and part of my job is to help prospective students pursue their passion. In my many years in college advising, I have worked with my share of high school seniors, degree completers, and career changers trying to decide that age old question "What to do I want to be when I grow up?" It is particularly the career changers who, although they have a strong desire, often lack the confidence to take action and make a radical change in their life in order to pursue career happiness. "What if I'm making a huge mistake?" or "I'm too old to change direction now." are some of the more common objections. As of a few weeks ago, I now have new response...Meet the Vogels.

The Vogels are a couple who came to Kendall College just over a year ago wanting to pursue a culinary arts education. For those of you unfamiliar, Kendall College is one of the top 10 Culinary Arts schools in the country and, not surprisingly, culinary arts is by far our largest program. What was surprising were the aforementioned Vogels; not that they were a husband and wife wanting to go to culinary school together, but that they were both in their 70's when the enrolled. Yes, you read that correctly. The Vogels had held many careers over their lifetime but were not ready for the world of retirement. They both had a desire for the culinary world and wanted to start a catering business. They are one of the nicest couples you will ever meet and were fully aware that they were likely to be the oldest students at Kendall. I am also certain there were a few chuckles at the thought of this post-retirement couple withstanding the daily rigors of a year-long program in which they would be subjected to long hours in the kitchen and holding up against students more than half their age. Well a few weeks ago there were no chuckles, only rousing applause as this couple walked across the graduation stage to accept their diplomas. Oh yes, and they have already started their catering business.

The moral of this story is very simple: WE are our own biggest obstacles in pursuing our dreams. My favorite quote is from Wayne Dyer; "There is no scarcity of opportunity to make a living at what you love, only scarcity of resolve to make it happen." Don't let YOU be the thing that stops you from achieving your dreams.

Beautifully written. Very

Beautifully written. Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!

So True!

As I find myself wondering (again) what do I want to be when I grow up, I'm realizing fear is my biggest obstacle!

Thanks for the inspiration to overcome the fear and conquer the world!

I am glad to hear you say that!

Hello,

That was a very inspiring story you posted about that couple not wanting to retire and deciding to pursue a career in the catering business! I guess now I really can not use that lame excuse that I am too old to pursue a new career as I am about 25 years younger than they are. LOL

I have always desired to become an elementary education teacher, but I keep finding reasons not to pursue my dream. This story is just the encouragement I need to get started!

Also, I have thought about working as a college advisor or admission and financial counselor, but I have not been very successful in finding out the best route to take to pursue this career path.

College advising career path

I'm so glad to hear that you are pursuing your teaching goal! My sister is a teacher and I know it is one of the harder jobs out there, but it also can be very personally fulfilling.

If you are interested in finding out what schools are looking for in college advising or admissions, I would recommend taking a look at some of the colleges in your area that have job postings. A great place to start is HigherEdJobs.com. I can also answer any questions you have as I have been in this field for almost eight years.

Best of luck to you!

Nicely-stated!

Thanks for these words! I work at a college, too; I am an English professor, and advising students is just part of the daily thing for the both of us, as it sounds.
Is Kendall College the one in Grand Rapids, Michigan?
I think your students are really blessed to have you in their corners advocating for them and helping them make those huge life choices. I thinik it's so important to support students and equip them with the confidence to pursue their dreams; their strengths often indicate a path to joy. What you are doing is essential!

Kendall College

Thank YOU! I was far removed from my high school days when I returned to college to finish my bachelors degree, so I completely understand how overwhelming it can seem to take on such a huge endeavor. It's definitely a big part of why I do what I do.

I'm with the Kendall College in Chicago, IL. I've heard of another one, probably the one you referenced in Michigan, because I've been asked if we have more than one campus. We are not affiliated with them however...just a case of mistaken identity. Smiling

I agree, WE are the biggest

I agree, WE are the biggest obstacle to overcome when achieving our dreams. That was really inspirational, thank you!!!

70 Years Young!

I think that they were 70 years young and not old. What a wonderful inspiration to those who feel their careers or lives have come to a halt. There are so many things that we can do in life and we do not have to choose "giving up."

When I attended nursing school, we had a 70 year old student who was also a former teacher. She could not get a job teaching because of her age. How disappointing! She did not give up. She studied diligently and graduated with good grades. Many around us quit but she stood the storm. During our graduation, she received the most applauses. It was inspiring.

I hope to have a zeal such as theirs. Life ends when we let go of our spirit. It was good to hear that I have something wonderful to look forward to at that age. Revival!!!
