Let me start this post by saying that I live and work on a four acre mini farm out in the country. I love it here, however, it has its drawbacks.
Last night, I took a break from work long enough to cool off. For me, this means going upstairs where the AC is and getting out of the office which has no air. I leave my outside office door open because it allows for at least some ventilation.
While I was upstairs, it began to thunder and lightning. I didn't think much of it as its done this every night for the past week yet we've had no rain (much needed rain, I might add). So when I came back down stairs.. what did I find? My dog Max (max the half jack Russell half Shihtzu, sitting curled up under my desk where he knows he is not supposed to be, hiding from the weather. I thought that was bad enough, until I went to put him outside and out from under my feet scampers a squirrel!
But that's not the end of it.. nope.. about 2 months ago, I was sitting with the door open and a bird flew in... I thought nothing of it.. i mean, its a bird, its not a bat. But later in that week I noticed that little birdy and her mate had built a nest on top of one of my bookshelves. I looked up the type of birds they are. They are nuthatches.
Well, when I came to the office this morning, Momma Nuthatch was sitting out on the bookshelf, waiting on me to open the door... as has become our routine. So I opened it, she flew out and after she left, I crawled up on a chair and peered into the nest. I now have four baby nuthatches, mom and dad living in my office.
Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "I work in a zoo!"
