Gossip Girl, et al.**

Have you seen the ads and billboards for the new season of Gossip Girl? They feature quotes from the Parents Television Council, New York Post and Boston Herald.

A few examples...

"Every Parent's Nightmare", "A Nasty Piece of Work" and my all-time favorite, "Mind-Blowingly Inappropriate".

I think these ads are genius. I know this show is trashy beyond all belief, but these ads have me, a grown women, intrigued, so imagine what Little Miss 14-Year-Old is thinking every time she sees them.

She wants to watch this show!

Now in the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I have watched Gossip Girl. I enjoy Desperate Housewives. I catch old 90210 and Melrose Place reruns when I can.

Despite being an intelligent, well-spoken, informed woman I LOVE trash TV.

And you don't get much trashier than Gossip Girl. Especially when you consider that it is targeted at teenagers! Last year as I was watching an episode I said to Ricky "I love this show, but if we had a teenage daughter there's not a chance in HELL she'd get to watch it."

And based on the aforementioned ads, I'm not the only one who feels this way.

The new 90210 premieres tonight (I've already mentioned my feelings on that here) and based on some reports it may give Gossip Girl a run for its money.

I'll be watching.

And waiting for another round of brilliant billboards.

**I feel I should add a disclaimer to this post. As I don't have kids yet, I probably find all of this a little more amusing than those of you who are trying to shield impressionable eyes and minds away from this crap. If it makes you feel better, when I do have kids feel free to point and laugh when I'm the one trying to do the shielding.

While my daughter is in middle school, not high school, I still don't see how she would feel enticed to watch that show, billboard or not. Children are most impressed, impressionable, and tend to emulate their parents habits. In other words, if you don't want your child to smoke...don't smoke yourself, if you want your child to be an avid reader...read to them and also, let them see you reading...and lastly, if you don't want your child to watch trashy shows on t.v...don't watch them yourself.
I know you said that you are not a parent, and believe me, I relate to the guilty pleasures of trash t.v., (LOVED 90210 and Melrose) but as a parent, we need to be aware of our surroundings in ways we never had to before! What children should be doing on a school night is homework, if they do sports or play an instrument, they should be practicing in that area, reading, and if they want some veg out t.v. time, show them some quality shows (with the 100's of channels out there, take time to look for something interesting.)
I can't believe the direction t.v. shows has gone in...Did anyone see the promo's for a show where they set up a production studio in a family's home and then give them challenges, such as, the boy wins a prize for finding his sister's diary? Such BS. Thanks for the post Lucy.
Peace to all.
