I saw this and thought it was a great reminder for us women to take care of ourselves. Last week was National Women’s Nutrition Week, as recognized by the US Department of Agriculture, among a number of other organizations. Here are some women’s nutrition tips from Coppell-based nutritional supplements company Mannatech, Inc.

MannaTips for Women’s Nutrition provided by Mannatech, Inc.:

1. Eat more fruit - Incorporating more fruit into your diet, such as grapefruit, has multiple health benefits for women.

“Grapefruits are full of vitamin C, a major antioxidant that may shorten the duration of colds and protect against free radicals,” says Zoe Singer in a WebMD.com feature from body+soul magazine.

A number of antioxidants are available as a nutritional supplement including AO® from Mannatech, a dietary supplement that combines a synergistic blend of carefully selected antioxidants and glyconutrients that can help protect against cellular damage and premature aging caused by oxidative stress (free radicals) in the body. *

2. Eat smaller more frequent meals - “Adopting a pattern of eating smaller, more frequent meals provides a number of benefits to both your health and weight loss goals,” says Megan Porter, RD in a newsletter from CaloriesPerHour.com. “You're less likely to overeat, and you'll have a regular influx of energy to help keep you active.”

An easy way to apply this tactic daily is to split your lunch in half before you begin eating. Eat the first half at lunch time and the second half three hours later. This also eliminates the temptation to snack during the afternoon.

3. Build up and protect your immune system -
A healthy immune system is key for women to fight off infections and potentially avoid them in the first place.

“Adequately feeding your immune system boosts its fighting power,” according to an article by Dr. William Sears on his Web site. “[Immune boosters] increase the number of white cells in the immune system army, train them to fight better, and help them form an overall better battle plan.”

Proteins rich in zinc like crab and oysters are good immune system boosters. Another source is through a supplement like Mannatech’s ImmunoSTART®. This supplement optimizes response of natural killer cells,(B-cells and T-cells) that seek and destroy foreign substances. *

4. Get more sleep -
In a story on About.com, Mark Stibich, Ph.D., says that among his list of top health benefits of a good night’s sleep are reduced stress and bolstered memory. Try to keep a routine sleep schedule (even on weekends). Your body will potentially begin waking to an internal clock instead an abrupt alarm clock.

5. Stay active - A regular exercise routine is made easier for women to stick to when they participate in a recreational sport they enjoy.

A health guide published online by the New York Times recommends developing an interest or hobby that requires physical activity and exercising with friends for added motivation.

A natural supplement can help increase energy and endurance. EM ∙ PACT® from Mannatech provides the fuel and biochemicals clinically tested to enhance cardiorespiratory fitness and improve endurance. *

Great advice!!

I start every meal with fruits and veggies. That way I eat more of the healthy stuff and less of the rest. I drink lots of water, because sometimes we feel hungry, when we're really just dehydrated. I love my tall soy lattes from Starbucks but I always get a water too. When I have dinner and wine/or martinis, I always order a large bottle of still water as well. It becomes habit and I stay hydrated.
