I've always thought that sleep deprivation was one of the most effective methods of torture (now before you report me to Amnesty International...hear me out). In fact, I have a torture plan that you might be familiar with (and most of you have probably been subjected to!) OK, here it is. You take the person, make sure they are very weak from an operation or major bodily stress, then you wake them up every two hours and force them to feed a delicate and extremely needy living thing whose life depends on that person's feeding methods, and while they're feeding it, make sure you pinch them continuously in a very delicate area!
Yup, I'm talking about breastfeeding a newborn. Now if that isn't torture I don't know what is! The upside is that you're in love with your beautiful, delicate and totally innocent "torturer" so it makes it all worth it. I remember the first time I thought about the link because sleep and torture. It was a few days after giving birth to my first son. You see, I'm one of those people that LOVES sleep. And I'm not talking about the regular person love of sleep, I'm talking about the way people love chocolate or diamonds. I'm talking L-O-V-E. My husband recently told one of our friends that he's tried several times to "outsleep" me but couldn't do it ("I slept until I just couldn't stay in bed any longer and she slept for another TWO hours" he said in mock amazement).
Now I'm not particular proud of this love of mine. In fact, over the years, I've been a little embarrassed by it. Especially when surrounded by driven successful corporate executives that try to one-up each other on how little sleep they can get and still be the super stars that they are...(now imagine a big manly booming voice)..."I get up at 5:00 am each morning to go running, then I read the WJS and the NYTimes and check my e-mails before I even get into work"..."you get up at 5:00? Wow, you're lucky, that's sleeping in for me! I get up at 4:00 am, go the gym, save the world and end world hunger, all before my 9:00 am staff meeting!" And all I can think is, wow, I'm getting sleepy just listening to these guys talking about sleep.
And it's not just these corporate super stars, a lot of busy people fill their days (and nights) with tons of work and family activities and sacrifice sleep to get it all done. And it is a sacrifice. I know what you're thinking...don't lecture me about sleep...I have kids, I have work, I have a million responsibilities and I just don't have the luxury of eight hours of sleep! Yes, of course, you're busy and you have important things to do for your family, I get that, but I think people generally underestimate the importance of sleep. I'm not the first person by any stretch to say this but I see sleep as one of the best ways to keep healthy and the best thing about it is that it feels great and its FREE (just like another great thing we love to do that's free...but that one can result in the sleep torture we've already talked about!).
So even though I don't shout it from the rooftops, I'm OK with not being as fit, as successful, or as organized as those overachievers that get up at 5:00 am to rule the world, because I'm doing something that is good for me (or that's what I tell myself every morning I sleep in an extra hour instead of doing the million other should-be-doing things!).

I love to sleep too, but the older I get, the less I sleep. I am often up 2am in the morning, and wondering what the heck is going on. I just can't simply fall asleep sometimes. I admire anybody who sleeps whenever s/he wants. Sleep is so under-rated.
Sex helps me sleep...
I find that after having GREAT sex, that I am more relaxed and sleep really well. The same is true for my partner. After GREAT sex, he sleeps like a rock...lol. He does not sleep as well if there is no sex.
Sleeping too much.... ??
I love to sleep but sleep is definitely not my friend. I can be falling asleep on the mouse button, walk the 10 feet to the bed and lay there for 4 hours. Sleep and I have had this love/hate relationship for too many years to count. I would LOVE to be able to sleep more (6 months of 2-3 hours of sleep leaves me .... cranky) but self experimentation has left me frustrated. And tired.
I have a line that I have beaten to death, "I'm tired of being tired."
Just so we're clear: I've tried the over-the-counter sleep aids. I've tired the pharmaceutical experts and dispensers. (Anybody ever notice anti-depressants are the first prescription handed out? I'm tired not depressed!) I've tried the all-natural, completely safe (it took me 6 weeks to 'get off' sleeping pills. They kept me awake). So out of necessity, I spent a week Googling sleeplessness. Now I discover that I'm Type A personality (remember that Type A quiz?). No wonder sleep aids is a multi-billion dollar industry!
I agree; sleep aids are a
I agree; sleep aids are a multi billion dollar industry for a reason. But out of curiosity, have you tried Sonata? It's an expensive little pill but does the job quite well. I only get it for long airplane flights, but if I have a few leftover it's like they're my special treat. They knock you out. And people hand out anti-depressants when you can't sleep because not sleeping or too much sleeping is usually a sign of depression.
I need 8 hours of sleep to function normally, which means I am perky, happy and smiling. Too often during the school year this does not happen. I also LOVE naps. Screw power naps, though; they never work. I always end up falling asleep for two or three hours.
Hope you get sleep sometime soon!

Sonata
Thank you Gen for the tip. (Please don't be insulted by my taking liberty in shortening your name. I'm old and lazy. ;P) I'll be looking for that magic pill on my next store run.
Having just completed 10 years of Over the Road trucking, I have learned to 'function' on very little sleep. (I keep thinking that after a year and a half of not driving that normal will kick in. Still waiting.)(Heavy sigh) However, to be socially acceptable, I really do need about 6 hours. I've discovered in my self-experimentation that I seem to run in cycles. I'll go 6 months of sleeping only 2-4 hours a night then it'll switch and for 3 months I can't sleep enough.
I've yet to pinpoint any associations to this cycle (i.e. certain foods, moon cycle, etc.) As mentioned before, I am desperate for info so jump in (please) if you know something.
Thanks again Gen, ;P
Take care and be well,

They hand out
They hand out anti-depressants for everything. I can't even begin to tell you how many suburban women I know who are on anti-depressants. I am not saying they are bad. If you need them then certainly take them. But I don't agree with too much or too little sleep being associated with depression. When your excited about life and have goals and dreams it is hard to sleep because your mind is always turning, thinking, going and is full of excitement.
I love sleep and I try to sleep when I am tired that is my bodies way of telling me to SLOW DOWN. I can go for a few days on very little sleep but it catches up with me and if I don't take the time to recharge I will be an emotional wreck!
Anti-depressants aren't for everyone and shouldn't be handed out like candy because doctor's don't have the time or patience to really listen or talk to their patients. There are so many women with thyroid problems which is a huge factor in sleep and yet you actually have to go see a specialist and get a whole gamet of blood test to be diagnosed. The regular doctor only does one blood test and never diagnoses thyroid issues, hence, they give you anti-depressants instead!
I had to fight with my doctor constantly and finally I went to a thyroid specialist who diagnosed it right away. Within the first 3 months most of my symptoms went away.
Thyroid issues
Hey there Freda...
I have begged, pleaded, attempted bribery, brought in sookies (thats my homemade goodies) and won't reveal my other grovelings to try and get a thyroid diagnosis. Since obesity is in my family tree, I have questioned the thyroid angle. However, since the only blood test a regular doctor will do comes up thyroid normal, I can't get to the next step.
Anyone have any ideas on how to get a doctor to run the tests you want run?
Sleep
Having four boys leaves me with very little time to myself. So I tend to sacrifice sleep (sometimes)in order to get some time for me.

sleep issues...
I have to have a minimum of 6 hours sleep in order to be a fully functional human. I had sleep issues years ago when I was working night shift. They had me move up my hours and that still did not help. I could not make myself fall asleep.
Not sleeping caused headaches. Migraines of serious proportions. I say this because I know firsthand what sleep deprivation can lead to; depending on your body and your brain, further issues.
I had to start with caffeine. I cut it out. At first I just cut it out 4 hours before sleep. Then 6, now if I have any caffeine at all during the day I know that I will not go to sleep quickly at all. I thought about how much caffeine I was putting in my body to stay up late for the nightshift, and its a wonder I ever GOT to sleep!
That was my first step. Then I had to cut back on chocolate. When I was actually going into a place to work, there was always chocolate around me, everyone had it. Sooo inevitably I was having lots of chocolate. I cut that out. Now I can have some occasionally, but I do not go overboard on it. As they say, everything in moderation. And once in a while chocolate cake or a brownie is okay. Just not every day, every hour, hahaha...
Then after that, I watched the amount of sugar I was having during the day. Especially after I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my second baby. At that point I was having to write down what I was eating and keep track of my blood sugar 3 times a day.
At that point I started eating healthier, less bread, less pasta, for me I had to also go to lactose free milk or soy milk too. Also, drinking more water during the day also helps improve everything, digestion, fatigue, your brain function. So in addition to walking, eating better, I was drinking water. When I still have issues, I take Melatonin, which is a more natural sleep aid, 30 minutes before I want to go to sleep, and this works for me like a dream.
Hope this helps!!! I know what its like to not be able to sleep!!
