For some women being a girl doesn't have much to do with nail polish and designer bags. For me womanhood is being as good at a man's game as any man. Not in the boardroom but on the adventure. Whether it's dogsledding, cycling, climbing or changing the oil on my generator I'm thrilled to be able to play with the boys. My greatest thrills though come from helping other women accomplish physical feats. Most recently this would be encouraging women who have little cycling experience to train for and complete a long-distance adventure in a remote area. If you not into eye makeup and high heels or even if you are, check out how you can participate in an event with good companionship to share the journey. www.elementalfitness.blogspot.com

You are so right, being a girl is whatever each individual defines herself to be! I love that.

tomboy till I die
I used to hate that phrase, "tomboy". Today, I don't so much. I'm like you, its not even about being as good as any man as it is about being good at what I love doing and want to do. Without letting some stereotypical ideal of the "perfect girl" hold me back.
A few years ago, a young friend and I (I was mentoring her at the time) took a series of photographs relating to just this subject. The series is called "Death of an Unrealistic Ideal". I've had soo many people make comments regarding the photographs. Some good, some not, but it started a dialog that still goes on to this day. You can see one of the images from the series here: http://www.cherisecarterphotography.com/index.php?...

Interesting shot. I used to do wedding photography, but found it tiresome and stopped. Now I just enjoy the hobby and the pictures I take.
I'd be interested in seeing more of your work.

Thank you for posting this
Hi there, Susan. I just noticed AlphaWomen through an ad on facebook, and thought I'd swing by. I wasn't going to set up an account, because the site just looked too... well, I won't use the first word that comes to mind. Suffice it to say that the site didn't look like it was the site for me because I'm just not the typical woman. Your post here changed my mind, and I registered if only so that I could leave you a comment and thank you for showing that girls don't have to be all high heels and nice nails.
I spent this morning putting together thousand-pound sling loads and then hooking them up under a helicopter so that the food, supplies, and gear could be air-lifted to a remote backcountry site I'll be working out of several weeks over the course of the summer. My entire ground crew was composed of women (though in the interest of full disclosure, the entire crew at the backcountry site receiving the loads were my male coworkers). I don't wear makeup. I am laughed at (good-naturedly) around work for manicuring my nails with a leatherman tool during lulls in the action. I don't do a man's job, I just do 'my' job, and don't think twice about how atypical it might be.
Anyway, thanks for posting. I'll swing by and take a look at your blog and the EF blog. Small world, by the way... I live just off the Klondike highway - have a fun solstice next year...

Thanks for posting. I read
Thanks for posting. I read your profile and it is quite impressive. I think you will be incredibly surprised at the different types of women here in our community. I myself am not the typical woman either as so many of the women here.
Most of the women here are very unique and really take the time to define themselves through following their passions. I love that you work out doors! I come from a construction company background so everything you talk about is very familiar to me. Every since I could walk, I was going with my Dad on job sites and would sit in the car while he would work a site or do a bid.
Thanks for giving us a shot and I hope that we exceed your expectations.
You asked about...
Hi Freda, you asked about the cycling trip.
At this time the details are loose. They will be worked out by November of 2008. Basically everyone flies into Whitehorse, Yukon Territory on June 15th. Bike are assembled and transported to (or cycled) a short ride to Lake Laberge for an overnight camp and assembly meeting.
There are very limited services on this trip so it is definitely camping that is covered in the fee. If an individual wants to stay at a hotel in the one community that has a hotel over the 5 cycling days arrangements can be made for that.
The cost of the trip includes some meals, vehicle assistance and camping accommodations.
The trip concludes with 2 days in Dawson City and individuals either fly from Dawson or ground transportation will be arranged from Dawson to Whitehorse.
Although this is a somewhat arduous trip, the pace and support is such that novice cyclists can complete it with determination. However, it is vital that the individuals train. As a personal trainer I can provide internet assistance with their training program with a paid deposit.
The cost of the trip is $1,000. Accommodations, special events & vehicle support are included in this amount.
Thanks for posting. If you want an html ad clip I can send you one, let me know.

That would be great. Once
That would be great. Once you get the dates nailed down I will post it on our event calendar. But I need some dates, even rough dates.
Sounds like a lot of fun!
Yukon and stuff
I checked out your website. I had really wanted to be a park ranger as a teenager and young adult, but dumb choices got in the way. However, I am not at all unhappy with how my life has turned out so far.
The Klondike Hwy is a great cycling route and the people you meet along the way are very friendly.
Maybe next year we'll have to meet and say hello. Pelly? Stewart? Moose Creek? or are you close enough for a big cinnamon bun.
