Today I had to make a sign for the residents who live in my building (I am a Community Coordinator in campus housing). I typed it up using Google docs (my new favorite thing), printed it using my own printer (on the grayscale setting of course, because I can't afford to refill the color ink at the moment), then I posted the sign.
One of my residents apparently did not like the message on the sign, so he or she decided to take it down. This caused me to reflect on the myriad of reasons why this act pissed me off.
1. I don't have time to keep making stupid signs for stupid people.
2. It's a waste of paper to make another sign.
3. It's rude to go tearing down signs that aren't yours.
4. It's immature and passive aggressive to communicate your feelings in such a way.
5. It's a waste of expensive ink!
As I thought about it more, I realized that I actually do need more ink for my printer, but each time I buy new ink cartridges (one black, one for color) It costs me about $50. For $50 I get about 4 ounces of ink. Do you know what that means? That means that my printer ink costs about EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS A GALLON-no exaggeration! Is it me, or is that the most brazen price gouging you've ever NOT thought about. I mean, I always thought my ink cartridges were expensive, and it always pissed me off that Canon ink cartridges are the only ones that you can't get refills on, but I never sat down and did the math. I mean 800 dollars a gallon??? Is there a more expensive liquid on the planet???
I guess the convenience of my printer/copier/scanner overshadowed reality for a brief moment in time, but from this point on, I live in the shadows no more! Despite it being finals week, I am setting forth on a letter writing campaign. First to Canon, then the Better Business Bureau, then my congressman. I am not kidding! This is ridiculous! Epson, HP, Canon...you're going down!

Has always amazed me. We keep driving down the cost of everything else computer related (remember whena 4MB RAM chip was $100? I do.) I just bought external hard drive with 250 Gig on it for about $100. Yet we are still paying an outrageous price for INK. This is not Chanel No.5 or the new Vera Wang perfume.. it's crappy cheap ink. That they can make from freaking soy.
I'm with you.. write that letter... start that petition and I'll sign first!
UNITE!
