The Electronic Wasteland on 60 minutes....My letter to 60 minutes.....
I saw the special last night and I was in tears. I cannot believe we as a world have done this to our selves and other living creatures around us. it is not our right to do this. As hard as it is to watch I am thankful you did a story on it. After the show was over I was not clear of what is being done about this situation. Are we going to let these people do this? Was this just lip service? I am willing to do something about it. I do not know what it is, but I am willing to help anyway I can. Are you?
Updates...no answer from 60 minutes, like I figured. Do you have any suggestions? Anyone has a person that works for Operah that I can contact reg this? Or anyone that has a good lead I can contact?

Did you see The Death of the Plastic Bag article? It had the same effect on me. I don't know Oprah or anyone who works for the Oprah show but I am sure she is already aware of this. These things should really make all of us take a step back and look at how our consuming is effecting other parts of the world. It made a believer out of me and I have changed many of my ways.
I think that until we see programs, photo's like these, many of us don't even know it is happening. Some just turn a blind eye.
Welcome and thanks for posting!

I saw this too. It was heartbreaking and sobering. It makes me glad that I actually have a drawer full of old cellphones, and an old laptop under my bed. But what ARE we supposed to do? I can't keep all my old cell phones forever.
Maybe a good place to start would be to contact local government officials and propose regulations to implement some kind of checks/balances.
I just don't know. It is pretty sick though.

I don't have television, so
I don't have television, so I missed the program, but I'm aware of the general problem and thought I'd chime in. I try to freecycle my working electronics, and recycle the rest. I just built a new computer, and plan to securely wipe the hard drive on the old one, then plan to find a low-income family in our community that needs a system. I'll set it up for them and probably even spend an afternoon showing them the ropes. I'm pretty excited about it.
Check with your local recycling authority about recycling your electronics--some require a fee, or only have select days of the year when they accept items, but there are proper ways to dispose of electronics so that their parts and the chemicals they contain don't go out into the environment. And some companies are starting to accept their old products back... so that's another avenue to pursue. It takes work and energy, but it's so worth it.
