Rev. Jeremiah Wright Building $1.6Million Home???

Yes, you read it correctly. Last night as I was perusing through the channels, I landed on Fox and couldn't believe my ears. Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church, I don't know if they are aware of this, are building him a 10,000 square foot home, in a gated community, on a golf course and he has a $10 million line of credit against the house!? It gets worse for him. It is in an ALL WHITE neighborhood? The estimated total cost of the house is approximately $1.6million.

I don't have a problem with money. I have lot's of money that I work my ass off for. I live a beautiful life. My problem with this is that this man stands at the pulpit and preaches a different message to his impoverished congregation arguing and criticizing against materialism and against this exact behavior. Does this make sense to anyone? While much of his congregation suffers financially, he is building his "Kingdom" hear on earth? No less with THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY!

I am just completely outraged at this and other religious leaders taking advantage of people "IN THE NAME OF GOD." How hypocritical. I am wondering what the back lash is going to be from his own congregation and the rest of the world. Did he really think no one would notice?

Please Get the Facts

Sophia, we are all entitled to our opinions, this is true, but one of the first rules of journalism is to make sure that your sources and your facts are true. Rev. Wright's congregation, of which I am a member is not "impoverished." Everyone who lives on the South Side of Chicago is not poor. Within our congregation, we have all types of members - PhDs to TANF! Rev. Wright is a speaker who is in demand all throughout the world, Africa, Europe, South America and even the states. His speaking engagements pay him more than most of make in a year, even well paid business owners such as myself. As you state you work your ass off for your money, so does he. You should read the congregational report of all that he did in the past year. He preaches against materialism that causes others to suffer such as corporations such as Wal-Mart who won't pay their workers livable wages or offer them health care. He has never suggested to his congregation that they should not strive for excellence and amass nice things. He only expects that the more you have, the more you owe to those less fortunate. He expects his members to give to the schools we build, the ministries that feed the hungry and the homes that house the homeless as he has done for his entire career. When you give much you receive much. His million dollar home - which is not far from my mine, and I am in no way impoverished- is well deserved! And I will tell you how his congregation feels, we are proud of his success, sad to see him retire, angry at the ridiculous portrait that the media has painted, and disgusted with the ignorance of the conversations being held by those who know nothing about him, our church or his congregation.

And why would his home being on a predominately white neighborhood be a problem? He has friends, collegues and even parishoners who are white. And if you've ever seen him, it is safe to say that he even has white family members! Don't be a victim of the media and their non-truths about a man who has devoted his entire life to fighting for equality of ALL people - even for you.
