The average American consumes an astounding 2-3 pounds of sugar each week, which is not surprising considering that highly refined sugars in the forms of sucrose (table sugar), dextrose (corn sugar), and high-fructose corn syrup are being processed into so many foods such as bread, breakfast cereal, mayonnaise, peanut butter, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, and a plethora of microwave meals

Sugar is virtually devoid of any key vitamins and minerals. Sugar contains 16 calories per teaspoon but has no B vitamins, chromium, magnesium, zinc or other trace minerals that the body needs to digest and metabolize it. For sugar to move through your digestive system, you body has to take B vitamins and other trace minerals from the healthy the food you eat, or from vitamins and minerals that your body is storing for future use. Sugar essentially robs your body of these beneficial nutrients.

Sugar gums up the immune system. Medical studies have found that antibody production drops after people have as little as 18 grams of sugar, about as much as you'd find in half of a can of regular soda. Sugar interferes with the cells of the immune system. Eating just 3 oz of sugar can result in a 50% reduction of the ability of the white blood cells to gobble up and kill viruses and bacteria for up to five hours.

You may be asking, do I really eat that much sugar?

Be sure to read labels. Sugar is everywhere in sodas, cakes, ice cream, and even salad dressings. Sugar is also used to feed animals prior to slaughter as it improves the flavor and color of cured meat. Sugar is added to hamburgers sold in restaurants to reduce shrinkage. The breading of many prepared foods contains sugar. Some fast-food restaurants sell poultry that has been injected with a flavorful honey solution. Sugar is used in the processing of luncheon meats, bacon, and canned meats. Sugar if found in such unlikely items as bouillon cubes and dry-roasted nuts. Sugar if found in beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages. Sugar is often added to the syrup in canned fruits. Peanut butter and many dry cereals (even corn flakes) contain sugar. Some salt contains sugar. Ketchup contains sugar. Etc. etc. etc.

When you crave something sweet, eat protein (like raw nuts and seeds). When you eat healthy you will avoid the ups and downs of sugar addiction. Processed sugar can not only causes addiction but it is linked to depression as well. Your best bet is to avoid sugar altogether by eating good quality foods.

Remember limit your sugar and your body will thank you for it. Artificial sugars are much worse so stay away from those. If you want to sweeten something Agave Nectar made from cactus or Stevia made from an herb is a much better choice.

What a great post Deanna! OMG, I had no idea sugar is lurking in practically everything you eat! If we are eating that much sugar on a weekly basis, no wonder why people are overweight and obesity is at an all time new high. Doctors simply are not educated in nutrition... and when a patient comes to theme for an examination, lab tests are done, and they are told their cholesterol is too high, they want to prescribe dangerous statin drugs to elevate the problem. I agree with you 100%, if people would watch their sugar intake, they would not be so overweight. I would avoid statin drugs at all costs... they are dangerous, there are many class-action lawsuits against the drug companies for liver failure, kidney failure, heart damage and deaths caused by patients taking these very dangerous drugs. They weaken your kidneys, wreck your liver and destroy your heart membranes. Thanks Deanna!

You are a plethora of knowledge. THANKS. I just called my mom to share that information with her. My father is on a very low dose of lipitor. She monitors his health like a watch dog.

I was just speaking with a dear friend of mine who is going to admit herself to a hospital to come off of all the medications that the doctors have her on for an physical issue she struggles with. She can no longer function, and the medince they have her on Ellen, you would be inflamed with anger.

She is going to get off all meds and try some alternative therapy. What scared her the most is that she has to go away for about 8 weeks like she is on drugs. My heart goes out to her, I will be emailing her everday to be there for her.

It has always been my belief that doctor's don't know best. Take care of your health. Eat the best foods, exercise and stay on top of now because once that wheel is set in motion it will deplete you in everyway, shape and form!

I almost fainted when I read your reply to Deanna's blog about sugar.

First, I would like to go on record and state that I am not an expert like Deanna, but I am well schooled in digestive diseases and liver problems. In 2006, I was diagnosed with a liver disorder, called NASH (short for non-alcohol steatohepatitis)which means I have a fatty liver. I have a great Gastro at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He has given me a wonderful education about the human digestive system and lymph system. He stated to me (rather firmly) there was no possible way he would ever prescribe any statin drug to any of his patients. The reason is they are DANGEROUS!!! Remember, certain doctors are slaves to the drug companies. All statin drugs tamper with the mechanics of your liver. What the drug companies and doctors fail to inform their patients that you will develop massive gallstones, severe constipation (yuck, who has time to be all bound up inside), weight gain, cognitive impairment, kidney stones, kidney damage and weakening of your heart. If you cholesterol goes below 200, you will suffer memory loss, including the hastening of dementia.

Thank you for writing this.  I wonder how many people are aware of the effect sugar has on the body, not to mention what common foods it is hidden in. 

I never eat frozen foods, I don't use my microwave and I try to follow the European way, eat little, eat fresh, eat good food.

I do love my wine though!

We just quit sugar

My boy friend and I recently cut out most of the sugar in our diets. I have to admit we were sugar junkies and didn't even realize how much sugar we were consuming in a day. We thought we were health nuts. The first week was the hardest, but it gets easier everyday. We didn't go to any extremes but we are trying to eat better.

We watched "Sicko" and "Supersize Me" over the weekend and what an eye opener. Thanks for sharing this information with us.

My father was on a lot of medication when I was growing up and I swore to myself that I would never let myself go like that.
