I love writing, reading, and words in general, and no one quite like Maura Dooley satisfies my monster craving for good poetry. Her work simply amazes me. This poem has been one of my favorites for a long time, and I thought I'd share it with you ladies...
My mother gave me the prayer to Saint Theresa.
I added a used tube ticket, kleenex,
several Polo mints (furry), a tampon, pesetas,
a florin. Not wishing to be presumptuous,
not trusting you either, a pack of 3.
I have a pen. There is space for my guardian
angel, she has to fold her wings. Passport.
A key. Anguish, at what I said/didn’t say
when once you needed/didn’t need me. Anadin.
A credit card. His face the last time,
my impatience, my useless youth.
That empty sack, my heart. A box of matches.
-Maura Dooley, "What Every Woman Should Carry."
As if we could all carry the essentials in our pocket, what we needed for a little inspiration and hopes, the key things to get us by in life. What would you carry? Mirror the poem if you have to, I don't care. I am curious to know - what's important to you, what would you put in a little backpack to take with you wherever you go?

Dirty mind I know but I thought you were going to say a Silver Bullet! =)) (LMAO)
In my purse rather big or small its always stuff to the point where I have to keep pushing stuff down to get it zipped.
* I carry my business cards, ok I'm a fanatic but its my living I have to give them out you never know who I will see.
* A maxi-pad or two. Sorry I don't do tampons. (I know, I know)
* Pens (with my company name all over them...here I go again) When I go to a restaurant and sign my credit card receipt I always leave my pen behind...I need the biz you never know who may get that pen.
* Ident-a-kids ID cards of my kids
* Cell Phone
* Candy (mints, laffy taffy)
* Most importantly my son's pacifier just in case of an extreme emergency, I call it "our secret."

Cool Post...
Ok, first of all I LOVE the pen idea. Thanks Surprise Honey.
I am diabetic so I always carry my glucose monitor and a snack. Plus, my cell phone and lipgloss. Typically I have my very slim wallet/card case that has business cards, pictures of my beautiful dogs, id, money and credit cards. But if I have to pare it down for a clutch I can
Perhaps I need something inspirational......
cool post
I usually carry small purses because the bigger the purse the more stuff I end up carrying with me.
I have my wallet which contains my credit card, pics of my son and husband, call cards and important numbers.
A pen, chap stick (cherry), my iPod shuffle, a liner and/or pad. I recently added I rosary that my dad had given my mom before he died, it reminds me of my dad and also to pray.

Most of the time I carry an oversized purse but I never fill it. For some reason I like to have extra space in my purse "just in case." If I stop at a store for a small purchase, I never get a bag, I just throw it in my purse. The essentials, for me: lipstick/gloss ( 4 or 5 of them, pens, a highlighter, a book I am reading, my cell phone, a book a log my ideas in, a mini sewing kit, loose change, receipts, and pads. Sometimes I shove my laptop in there too;-)
