When Did "Muslim" Become a Dirty Word?

This has been a gripe of mine for quite some time, most recently fed by the urban myth that Obama is Muslim, but it first began post-9/11. We have become a nation that has accepted the popular view that:

Muslim = Evil
Muslim = Terroist
Muslim = Hellbound

Review the above, think about a generation or two ago and then review the below. See anything similar?

Communist = Evil
Communist = Anarchist
Communist = Not Christian

Hmmm...
What we have here is a policy of fear. Every Muslim is no more a terroist than every Christian wants to run out and blow up abortion clinics. Fundamentalism exists in every religion, but by no means should it be representative or definitive of the entire religion.

What is even more disturbing to me is that no one stands up and says anything. Through our passivity, we've allowed an entire religion to be treated as a dirty word and accepted its treatment as such.

I would invite people to read Benazir Bhutto's "Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy and the West" and you will come away with a much more complete version of the Middle East and Islam than we read about in the West. fyi... want to read about a true Alpha Woman? Mrs. Bhutto was your girl.

Thank you for clearly

Thank you for clearly articulating a very serious issue that is plaguing the socio-political landscape and fueling some of the hate campaigning going around regarding Obama. I am not voting for the guy but have been as vocal about the way people are treating his affiliation with Islam.

Very much needed post!
Thanks!
